Position Title: Substitute School Nurse

Department:  Nurse/Health Department

Reports To: Principals, Primarily Elementary

 

Summary: To provide nursing services that focus on assessments, health counseling, education, referrals and consultations.  The corporation school nurse should:

  • Provide nursing care that incorporates health promotion and disease prevention
  • Work with groups, families and individuals who have an increased risk of illness, disability, or premature death
  • Function in multidisciplinary teams and programs
  • Refer to other agencies in order to ensure comprehensive health and welfare services needed to support health care
  • Work with and through community leaders, health-related groups, and relevant social action programs to advocate, develop, and implement programs of health promotion and disease prevention.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

    1. Develops, implements, and evaluates school health program goals, objectives and procedures in cooperation with school personnel and community resources.
    2. Identifies and reports environmental health and safety hazard (current or potential) for students and staff.
    3. Initiates, maintains, and annually reviews student health records (pupil health record, emergency information, immunization records, and report of physical examination).
    4. Maintains daily, monthly, and yearly statistical information regarding health status of students and staff and utilizations of school health service programs.
    5. Supervises health aides/paraprofessionals in assigned buildings.
    6. Assists in developing, implementing, and evaluating procedures and programs to assess the health and developmental status of preschool and school populations.
    7. Applies appropriate theories as a basis for decision making.
    8. Assists with training and education of paraprofessionals in proper techniques for medical treatments or procedures. Keeps documentation of training on file.
    9. Identifies health problems of students through health assessment, health histories, review of health records, and screening programs.
    10. Implements all screening programs mandated by Indiana law.
    11. Communicates current health problems, needs, and concerns of students to their parents and appropriate school staff.
    12. Develops Individualized Health Plan (IHP), with specific goals, objectives, and interventions based on student health needs.
    13. Participate on the child study teams at each building: assists in the identification of students with disabilities; interprets health factors pertinent to the student’s disability; and develop, implement, and evaluate the health component of the Individualized Educational Plan (IEP).
    14. Develops and maintains a system for providing first aid and emergency care.
    15. Administers medication and treatments to students per physician’s orders and parent authorization.
    16. Provides health counseling to student to assist them in making decisions regarding their health and health behaviors.
    17. Assists students and parents in identifying and utilizing available and appropriate community health resources.
    18. Facilitates the attainment of students’ health needs by providing support to students and their families.
    19. Provides educational opportunities for students to assist them in developing self-care skills to deal with health problems.
    20. Provides consultation and assistance to teachers in the planning, implementation, and evaluations of health education units.
    21. Provides in-service education opportunities for school staff on health-related issues.
    22. Collaborates with community, agencies, health professionals, and school staff to identify the health needs, current and potential, of children and youth to facilitate school and community planning and intervention.
    23. Critiques and utilizes current research in school, child, and family health and participates in health and educational research as appropriate.
    24. Assumes responsibility for personal professional development.

Education and/or Experience:

  • ·           Bachelor of Science in Nursing
  • ·           Licensed as a registered nurse, in accordance with the Indiana State Board of Nursing
  • ·           Certifiable as a school nurse, in accordance with the Indiana Department of Education
  • ·           CPR certified

While performing the duties of this job, the employee will occasionally sit, walk or stand. The employee will occasionally reach forward or above the head more than the average person will. Ability to visit various buildings in the district. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move and push up to 90 pounds such as student and students in wheelchairs. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision and depth perception.
